London, UK – The 23rd annual WhatsOnStage Awards, held on Sunday, February 12th, was a night for the UK theatre community to remember. A part of the AudienceView portfolio since 2017, the WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major UK theatre awards voted for by audiences, the event received thousands of nominations and votes from across the country. The awards culminated as a glittering spectacle at London’s Prince of Wales Theater with a star-studded red carpet, including Frances Ruffelle, the original Eponine from Les Miserables, Jodie Comer, Prime Facie, and George Takei, Allegiance. The night also featured over a dozen performances from major musicals.
The WhatsOnStage Awards have become a beloved institution in the UK theatre world over the past 23 years and have a reputation for being both inclusive and aspirational, giving recognition to a wide range of shows and performers from across the UK. The awards are a testament to the power of theatre to bring people together and create a shared experience that stays with audiences for a lifetime.
Event buzz drove 42% more traffic to the WhatsOnStage website and 4.2 million impressions on Twitter. The awards show made front-page news in newspapers such as the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, The Times, and The Guardian, and was also featured on the BBC, ABC News in the US, and other media outlets, showing the far-reaching impact of the awards on the industry.
AudienceView acquired WOS as part of a strategic effort to connect with consumers in the live events industry in addition to venues. WhatsOnStage is a strong brand in the UK, recognized around the world as a trusted source for theater news and reviews. The WhatsOnStage Awards are prestigious without being stuffy or holding fans at arm’s length; and are unique in that theatregoers get to make their voices heard. This relationship-centric way of operating is aligned with AudienceView’s brand and mission to transform how events are discovered, attended and remembered.
“We’re proud to have WhatsOnStage as part of the AudienceView family, and to celebrate the achievements of the UK theatre industry with the WhatsOnStage Awards,” said Mark Fowlie, CEO of AudienceView, “The awards show demonstrates the power of engaging with audiences, and we’re thrilled to continue supporting and celebrating the UK theatre community with this event.”
